Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. There is a plethora of couples out there trying to get their Valentine’s gifts sorted out for their significant others, and also organising their dinner plans. Well, that’s what most couples are doing! You are likely reading this because you enjoy heading out on the road, and perhaps with your other half too, on road trips across the country.

If you’re thinking of doing something different for Valentine’s Day this year, one idea you could consider is to organise a romantic road trip with the love of your life across Australia! Let’s face it, this country has plenty of scenic driving roads, some of which will no doubt be in reasonably local to you.

For those of you seeking an outdoors Valentine’s Day experience, take a look at these top five road trip ideas. Oh, and make sure you get your bags packed, and the petrol tank filled up before you both set off touring the country and making memories together!

1. The Great Ocean Road (Victoria)

The Great Ocean Road is about 243 kilometres long and runs along the southeastern coast of Australia between the cities of Torquay and Allansford in Victoria. Opened in 1932, it’s a two-lane road (one road for each direction) and has a speed limit that varies between 50 to 100km/h.

There is plenty to discover on a road trip along The Great Ocean Road. For example, one of the most memorable highlights of this outdoors road trip is The Twelve Apostles. Situated in Port Campbell National Park, these limestone structures tower 45 metres above the Southern Ocean.

2. The Great Alpine Road (Victoria)

Spanning 339 kilometres, The Great Alpine Road starts from Wangaratta in the north-east across to Metung on the Gippsland Lakes. The route leads you through a variety of diverse landscapes ranging from mountains through to coastal waterways, with some lush forests in between!

During your scenic driving, you could dine at a restaurant on your travels and enjoy fresh local produce in the famed Milawa Gourmet Region, for example. Or you could make your Valentine’s Day road trip even more memorable by taking a picnic for your significant other and ourself to enjoy amid your exploration.

3. Grand Pacific Drive (New South Wales)

Situated around an hour south of central Sydney, the Grand Pacific Drive is a140-kilometre scenic coastal route. It’s a drive that takes you through breathtaking rainforests and several coastal cities and townships. What’s more, you even get to drive across the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge.

Once you’ve reached the end of your journey, you could head back to Sydney through the Southern Highlands. Or, you may wish to continue onwards and drive towards the Victoria border, taking in Eurobodalla and the Sapphire Coast during your road trip.

4. Kosciuszko Alpine Way (New South Wales)

There is no denying that the Kosciuszko Alpine Way route offers travellers an unforgettable driving experience. With over 171 kilometres of road and landscapes to explore and traverse across, your significant other and yourself will find plenty to see and do on this memorable journey.

Horse riding is very popular in the high country. With that in mind, you could stopover at Adaminaby near the Snowy Mountains and go horseback riding through Kosciuszko National Park. If horse riding isn’t your thing, another option might be to take a break at the Wildbrumby Distillery and Cafe for a spot of lunch and perhaps you could treat your amour to a wine-tasting session there.

5. Great Tropical Drive (Queensland)

Last but by no means least we have the Great Tropical Drive in Queensland. Boasting ever-changing landscapes on the Drive, there are 26 different routes so that you can truly create a unique road trip.

Wine connoisseurs can visit the Atherton Tablelands and enjoy dining on fresh, local produce. Consider taking in the sights between the Great Barrier Reef and theWet Tropics rainforest on your travels!
